Traveling to Rehoboth Beach Delaware

Due to Delaware's post-election tradition of Return Day, scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010 in Georgetown, we are issuing this travel advisory for those who are traveling east from Va. Md. area or who had planned to use Route 18/404. We strongly urge you to avoid the Georgetown area on Thursday. This is a very big post election event in Georgetown and local traffic is closed for parades, etc. There will not be a problem on your return home.

Travel suggestion for those driving to Rehoboth Beach from points west via the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (US Route 50):

We wanted to mention one quick travel advisory for anyone coming to Rehoboth Beach from points west via the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (US Route 50).  Just prior to entering Delaware on Maryland RT. 404 past the town of Denton, we suggest that you take Maryland RT. 16, East which will in turn become Delaware RT. 16, East.  This route will take you east all the way to Delaware RT. 1, South, the gateway to all Delaware shore points, including Rehoboth Beach.

From Wilmington-area (either Commodore Barry Bridge in Chester Pa. or Delaware Memorial Bridge, New Castle) - Rehoboth is approximately two hours south.

Take I-95 South to Exit 7 Christiana Mall (Mall Road) - Route 1. Follow signs for Beach/Shore Points. Follow Route 1 (parallels Route 13) through Dover. You will go over a suspension bridge (C and D Canal). The first part of Route 1 is an express road with two tolls. This road reduces and merges with Route 113 in S. Dover, just before the Dover Air Force Base.  Route 1 and Route 113 share the same road until Milford.

Don't be startled if you see and hear C-5 and C-17 planes flying overhead. The planes are spectacular to hear and see- the roar can be quite loud!

Once you are past Dover AFB, continue on Route 1/113 south. Dover is one hour north of Rehoboth.  As you approach Milford (you will begin to see car dealerships on your right), you will want to stay in the left hand lanes. At Milford, Route 1 splits right into Route 113. Right will take you to southern shore points such as Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island and Ocean City, Md.  Stay LEFT on Route 1.

Once you are past the Milford split, in about a half an hour, you will begin to see resort signs and will approach the Nassau/Lewes area. As you approach Lewes, you will see more commerce...a Lowes Home Improvement will be on the right. Keep Straight!  Route 1 now becomes Coastal Highway. You will pass many intersections as you proceed through this area.  You will pass Midway Shopping Center on the left and Tanger outlets on the right.  After you pass a second Tanger Outlet Center (on the left) we suggest you stay straight but in the left hand lanes.  You will pass an Outback Steakhouse and CVS on the left and a third Tanger Outlet on the right. Proceed straight, and on the left you will see overhead green highway signs directing you to Rehoboth Beach. You will go over a small drawbridge, and will quickly approach a turn-a-bout. If you envision entering the turn-a-bout at the six o'clock position, you will exit at the 12 o'clock position (or go straight if there weren't a circle). You are now on Rehoboth Avenue.

Proceed straight on Rehoboth Avenue...you will see a Grotto's Pizza restaurant. You want to go all the way up to the gazebo-like bandstand, it is shown on the map as a tight paper clip turn around, forcing you to turn either before it or behind it -  it doesn't matter - you will soon be going in the opposite direction from when you came in. Circle around. You will pass Nicola's Pizza, Carlton's on your right. Make the first right on 1st Street and then the first right on Baltimore Avenue. Go all the way to the end, Atlantic Sands is on the left.

IF YOU ARE TRAVELING I-95 FROM POINTS SOUTH:
Take I-95 N. First exits into Delaware are for UD Newark (Route 896 North) and Glasgow/Bear (Route 896 South). Take 896 S. Follow 896 South through Middletown. At the 896/301 intersection, turn left at light and proceed east on Route 896 until you reach Route 13.

At  this intersection you have two options:

Option A. At Route 13, you can turn right and follow this as the local road through Dover. At Dover, after you pass Dover Downs and as you approach the Target on left and Royal Farms on right,  you will need  bear left in preparation for the 13/113 split. You are going to leave Route 13 and pick up Route 113. For this stretch Route 113 and Route 1 share the same designation. Stay in the left two lanes and proceed on  113 toward shore points until Milford. As stated above, after you pass auto dealerships on right, Route 113 will divert right and Route 1 will divert left. Proceed on Route 1.

Option B. From Route 896 you will approach the Route 13 intersection but instead of turning right, cross the intersection. You will see a Wawa on your left. As you cross the other side of the intersection, there will be signs, immediately on the right, for Route 1. This is the express toll road. This will run parallel to Route 13 but will bypass all local traffic through and including Dover business district and will merge with Route 113 as you approach the Dover Air Force Base.  Route 1 and Route 113 will share designation until you approach Milford split, approximately 20 minutes later.
